New Delhi [India], February 2 (ANI): After Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal alleged ‘harassment’ of his party workers ahead of Delhi assembly elections, the Election Commission of India on Sunday responded that no written complaints with the police could be traced with regards to the allegations levelled by the former Delhi Chief Minister.
“DEO, New Delhi stated that regarding allegations against BJP workers for intimidating and harassing AAP volunteers in New Delhi Assembly Constituency, as reported by police as well as on perusal of available records in his office, no written complaints could be traced in most of the cases,” the letter signed by MCC (Model Code of Conduct) Nodal Officer read.
The poll body assured that all written complaints registered by political parties on such allegations are investigated as per the law and norms set up by the ECI. Regarding the complaints raised by Kejriwal in his letter, the police have reported that necessary action was taken as per law in all the cases.
“However, it has also been informed that whenever written complaints are received from any political party citing such allegations, all such matters are investigated invariably in accordance with laws & ECI norms and appropriate action as per ECI norms is either initiated or recommended in all such cases,” the letter read.
On his demand to deploy independent observers to ensure fair elections, the Election Commission assured that concerned observers have been deployed for all constituencies.
“As far as the issue of Independent Observer is concerned, it is to inform that General Observers, Expenditure Observers and Police Observers have already been deployed for all Constituencies including New Delhi Constituency,” the poll body said.
This comes after Kejriwal wrote a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging that his party workers in the New Delhi Assembly constituency were intimidated and harassed by BJP workers in the New Delhi Assembly constituency.
In his letter, Kejriwal said, “I am writing to express my grave concern over the intimidation and harassment being meted out to our grass-root volunteers in the New Delhi Assembly Constituency at the hands of BJP workers and Delhi Police in the run-up to election day.”
Notably, Kejriwal is up against Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit and BJP’s Parvesh Verma from the New Delhi assembly constituency.
The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled to take place on February 5, while counting of votes will be held on February 8. (ANI)
