Kharagpur (West Bengal) [India], April 18 (ANI): After West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Principal Chief Advisor Dr Amit Mitra stated that the “Uniform Civil Code will not be implemented across the country,” BJP leader Agnimitra Paul hit out at Trinamool Congress saying that the ruling Bengal party needs to stop misguiding people over Citizenship Amendment Act, National Register of Citizens, and Uniform Civil Code.
“Amit Mitra said that they will stop NRC, do you have some disease? Because we never spoke about NRC so when did you start lying like your supremo? We will implement CAA, we did not speak about NRC so don’t spread information to the public. You said that you won’t let UCC get implemented, who are you to stop that?” Agnimitra Paul told ANI on Wednesday.
“If CAA has been implemented in the whole country, the same will happen in West Bengal also. If UCC gets implemented in the whole country, it will be implemented in West Bengal too. West Bengal is a part of this country,” she added.
Earlier, Mamata Banerjee’s Principal Chief Advisor Dr Amit Mitra said that BJP is destroying the basic structure of democracy and Trinamool Congress will fight against these issues.
“NRC will be stopped. UCC will not be implemented across the country. The BJP is destroying the basic structure of democracy. Our leadership when they went to Delhi was humiliated. We will be fighting against all of these major issues,” he said.
This comes as the BJP in its election manifesto vowed to implement the Uniform Civil Code. The party said that women in the country can’t get equal rights until a common legal code is implemented.
“Article 44 of the Constitution lists the Uniform Civil Code as one of the Directive Principles of State Policy. BJP believes that there cannot be gender equality till such time Bharat adopts a Uniform Civil code, that protects the rights of all women, and the BJP reiterates its stand to draw a Uniform Civil Code, drawing upon the best traditions and harmonising them with modern times,” the party’s manifesto read.
UCC is contemplated as a common set of laws for citizens governing personal matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, irrespective of gender, sex, religion, or caste.
Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to implement UCC earlier this year. (ANI)
